Brenda, a self taught and highly creative jeweller,
recently asked me to shoot some of her pieces for the new website.
It was a shoot that gave me great joy on many levels: working with another creative spirit, with beautiful pieces of jewellery,
with light that complemented the work , and shooting in the peaceful and beautiful environment of the Montebello Design Centre. (Newlands, Cape Town)
Brenda works mainly with silver, precious and semi precious stones, wood and leather.
She makes pieces on commission as well as giving regular ongoing classes that culminate in an end of year exhibition and sale.
A highly sought after event by those in the know!
As with a true artist, anything, a mood, a season or a walk in a forest sparks the inspiration, and sets Brenda off on yet another handmade, one-off creative journey.
These pieces are all so unusual as they don’t fit or conform to any specific category or style, but come from a deep and free flowing inspiration.
The Montebello Design Centre itself is filled with creative spirits, and had on site more than 20 studios and workshops producing various arts and crafts,
such as the Forge, Weavers Studio, Kwalapa Organic Deli/shop,
Lesley Charnock’s art gallery, as well as a superb restaurant, appropriately named the Gardener’s Cottage.
There is also the most magical greenhouse where the smells, soft light and muted sounds stir childhood memories.
Although the website is still to be designed Brenda has a really fun blog spot where all the fun of her studio can be seen,
together with other light-hearted esoteric articles such as “La Tarte à la Tomate “ and “how to make a simple light box” !
